Hong Kong Head Coach Simon Cook said, “Although this role is currently an interim one, it has been really good to spend more time with the players identifying areas of improvement individually and collectively. For me, the most exciting area of this role is the U19s, they have performed really well in the recent Premier League competition with some players standing up and really starting to push hard for a place in the senior squad.”

“There has been a lot of talk about possible games against full members, but we need to remain focused on the main reason we are there which is I-Cup and WCLC.”

“The UAE trip will be tough physically and mentally. It’s a great place to go and play cricket and it will reward those that have put the hard yards in. I expect to see us put into practice the skills and mental changes that we have been working on over the last 6 weeks and if we do that we will give ourselves a great chance of success.”

Cook represented Middlesex (1997-2004) and Kent (2005-2012), playing 141 first class matches and 190 List A games. Now an ECB Level 4 coach, his most recent roles have been as the Head Coach for the prestigious Hong Kong Cricket Club and a stint coaching the French national cricket team before that. In his 16-year cricketing career in the United Kingdom, Cook has been fortunate enough to play against many of the world’s leading players of his generation.

HKCA CEO Tim Cutler said, “The appointment of Simon Cook as men’s head coach is another positive step in our development. Formerly an additional task of Charlie Burke’s in his continuing role of Director of Cricket, this appointment allows Charlie to concentrate on the overall plan for the cricket department especially in developing cricketing pathways for the local Chinese population.”

“Simon is a consummate professional. The combination of his technical prowess and calm demeanour will be the perfect combination to nurture the potential of the men’s team.”

HKCA Director of Cricket Charlie Burke said, “It will be a great challenge to see how the players and coaching staff adapt to playing all three formats in less than a month of quality cricket. The UAE has often been a tough test for us. With the quality of opposition, it will again be a great opportunity for us to further develop. I’m excited for Simon Cook who will be on his first assignment as head coach as well as for Ishtiaq Mohammad and Chris Carter who have come through the system over the last year or so.”
