Pakistan rode on half-centuries from Younus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq to get into a good position on Saturday (October 24), the third day of the second Test in Dubai.
Wahab Riaz, the left-arm paceman, and Yasir Shah, the legspinner, took four wickets each as Pakistan bowled England out for 242. Riaz took 4 for 66 and Shah took 4 for 93, giving their team a first-innings lead of 136 runs.
Younus and Misbah then shared an unbroken 139-run fourth-wicket partnership to take Pakistan to 222 for 3 on a wearing pitch which is expected to increasingly help the spinners as the match progresses. Younus was 71 not out and Misbah was in sight of his second century in the match, unbeaten on 87. The duo's efforts helped Pakistan stretch the overall lead to 358 runs when stumps were drawn at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Younus, who completed 9,000 Test runs during the course of his knock, and Misbah came together with Pakistan having lost three wickets.
First, James Anderson had Shan Masood nick one to the wicketkeeper when the batsman was on 1. It was the fourth consecutive time Anderson removed Masood this series.
Shoaib Malik then inside-edged a drive on to the stumps off Mark Wood as Pakistan slipped to 16 for 2. The recovery started through a 67-run third-wicket stand between Mohammad Hafeez and Younus.
Hafeez struck six fours and two sixes during his attacking 76-ball 51. He raised his half-century with a pulled boundary through midwicket off Wood. However, the bowler would get the better of him the very next ball when Hafeez edged a drive to Joe Root at slip.
Younus and Misbah's stand, their 14th of 100 or more in Tests, then steered Pakistan to safe waters.
Younus got to his half-century with a flick to deep fine leg off Stuart Broad. Shortly before reaching his half-century, Younus reached another landmark. When on 47, he became the first batsman from Pakistan, and 14th overall, to complete 9,000 runs in Test cricket.
Misbah also played a stroke-filled knock, hitting two big sixes off Adil Rashid to complete his half-century. Misbah has hit four sixes and eight boundaries off 137 balls so far.
The day began with England, resuming on 182 for 3, and losing quick wickets from a strong position. Riaz and Shah did the bulk of the damage as England lost seven wickets for 60 runs.
It all began with Riaz inducing an outside edge from Root on the drive for Sarfraz Ahmed, the wicketkeeper, to tidy up behind the stumps. Root had started off by scoring two boundaries off Shah in the fourth over of the day. But Riaz got one to swing away from the right-handed Root to send back England’s No. 4.
Riaz bowled with precision and followed it up with the wickets of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, who were also caught behind. Shah then joined in the act, getting rid of Adil Rashid (0) and Jonny Bairstow in the same over.
Bairstow, with whom Root had added 79 for the fourth wicket, struck five boundaries and a six on his way to 46. Shah trapped him in front of the wicket, leaving England at 223 for 8. In between, Riaz had Stokes and Buttler caught behind in successive overs.
Wood edged one to the slip cordon off the Shah. Imran Khan then prised out James Anderson with a short ball as Sarfraz completed his fifth catch of the innings.
